A key point you made was having a good year. I like everyone to learn something and all the kids have different abilities in how much they can learn. Plus, your 12 year old is a huge asset. Have used my older son many times. Amazing how the little ones respect and listen to the older children.
I like repetition in my practices. I introduce basic things I want the team to learn Review at the beginning of next few practices after they start getting it I just occasionally ask for their response.
First, this is what we call the bases..1 2 3 4 Many of them will know first second.. but we call them 1 2 3 4 from now easy. It will make your life and theirs much simpler.
Next, I go to 3 rules.. Rule 1 Always watch the ball.. Rule 2 Ready position, Rule 3 Move your feet(you have somewhere to be.
Walk the bases with them. When you get to first this is where we introduce the one time we don't watch the ball. We watch the coach and base. Introduce hand signals(its hard for little kids to hear over parents/crowd). Include anything else relevant about 1st base. Go to 2 3 4 and include info you want them to know.
Start practice off with short to 1, I like a glove side drill, and a two ball drill also, these are great warm ups and get the kids doing the right things from the start. After a few you can rotate these drills as starting points for practice and get more of your practice time for positional play and hitting.
Finish with a game..or 2. I always liked to just divide them in half so they could all get some infield time and have parents play outfield, if none will a hit to the outfield is a double.. This has always been popular..because I'm telling, they want to play! Another game is infield or outfield comp(competition). Show me ready field the ball , make a good throw, if not your out. Last man standing wins
I could go into more detail but thats a good start. PM in the members area if you need more detail.
