coachtrev writes "This infield drill focuses on making good throws from various points in the infield, using your hand to pick up a stopped ball and your first baseman gets a lot of work also. A coach of several years told me about this drill so we tried it at practice and the kids had a lot of action and fun with it. We called it Infield Scramble.
Infield Scramble Youth Baseball Drill
Note : We always suggest putting your kids into groups for more effective use of practice time.
Line up a group of kids at 3rd base. Have a first baseman. Toss out 5 balls in front of the base. When you say Go 1 ! The 1st player at first base hustles to the balls, he will have to pick up the non-moving ball with his hand , set his feet , and make a good throw to first base. 5 Times. Then the next player..etc.
You can do this drill from any base or position on the field, or you can have your infielders set in their positions and simply toss out 5 balls in front of the position. Take turns..we do not want the first baseman fielding balls except from one player at a time.
We also made it into a little game to see who made the best out of 5 throws to first base.
This is a fun easy to do youth baseball drill and gets several throws in from each player quickly while enforcing some basic mechanics like setting your feet, line your body up with your target, and picking the ball up with your hand. This is important, many youth baseball players want to pick the ball up with their glove even if the ball is not rolling. You can use a player first baseman and get him a lot of catching throws work in also.
