Increased Throwing Velocity - Dick Mills on increasing throwing velocity
coachtrev writes "Pitching coach dick Mills has some great tips on increasing throwing velocity quickly
based on using Momentum Pitching. If you don't know about Momentum
Pitching, it is a new way to build forward momentum in any
pitcher's delivery by stepping back toward second base, then pushing off that
step back foot into the pivot and then driving away from the rubber sideways
without any leg lift. Basically speeding up the body.
This is quoted from a Dick Mills newsletter about increased pitching velocity.
"Anyway, here are 7 ways to boost pitching velocity fast that not one coach in
100 understands. Maybe 1 or 2.
If for some reason you are not familiar with Momentum Pitching, I want you to
read this and then try to understand it all by yourself. Does this make sense to
you.
These are the elements to practice:
1. Develop a longer stride to several inches longer than body height.
2. Create big step back while lifting hands up after starting in a
slightly bent over position (as per Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax).
3. Lead with front hip while pointing lead knee more in between
home and third rather than at third base (RH) while keeping foot
under knee (this speeds up your movement rather than waiting to get
your lead knee pointed at third base for a RH pitcher)
4. Landing on the lead leg... only after the drive leg movement is
completed (producing a very long stride). You want a complete "push
off" action with an extended back leg.
5. Flexing the trunk forward (slam trap door shut) until the back
is close to parallel to the ground.
6. Removal of any deliberate delays, hesitations or slowing of
movements.
7. Explosive initiations of the full action.
Any pitcher who does not presently do any of these things should
increase velocity when even one or more of them is done.
It would be a matter of simply determining which action would have
the most impact. Knowing what the options are, it should be
possible to demonstrate "miracles" for just about any pitcher of
any age.
There are dozens upon dozens of major league pitchers who could
increase velocity up to 10 mph by using these techniques rather
than no step back, lifting to balance, and trying to generate
momentum too late in the delivery. Many could get an extra 5-7
during just one session.
There are several teaching methods out there if you would like to learn more about Dick Mills pitching theory and increase pitching throwing velocity ..you can view his site here. http://www.pitching.com/
