Watch the Pitcher - Why Youth Baseball Hitters should watch the pitcher.

I have heard it. I have said it. Tell the players of our team to watch the pitcher. Why do coaches and parents tell players to watch the pitcher? Many do not know. They have heard it somewhere, and youth baseball has a lot of vocals in it, so it is repeated. There is a why we tell our kids to watch the pitcher. If everyone knows why, it is more likely the players will be watching instead of goofing off in the dugout.

Most pitchers give something away. Most do not even know it unless they watch many videos of themselves. Even then the youth baseball pitcher may not see the hints, given away unless someone else reviews. I remember a certain MLB hitter said he could always hit a certain MLB pitcher, because he would just wait on the fastball. The pitcher always stuck his tongue out a little bit when he threw a fastball.

As youth baseball hitters the develop the mental aspect of baseball becomes more important. There are things a youth baseball hitter should be aware of as he develops in his hitting.

The time a pitchers hand is in the glove and the angle of the wrist can give away a pitch. A bent wrist means a breaking ball could be coming. A straight wrist means fastball. How long the hand is in the glove can be a tip off for the pitch you are about to see. A 2 seam and 4 seam ball need the least amount of time to grip. If you a pause while the pitcher gripping the ball (finding the seams), this could be an alert to an off speed pitch. Movement pitches and change ups require more hand motion than 2 seam/4 seam balls.

Stretch position, a lot of youth pitchers tend to raise their hands a little higher to try and gain more leverage and speed . Hands not going as high (pitchers want their off speed stuff to be low in the strike zone) could be a tell that an off speed pitch is coming and presenting an opportunity to steal with a good lead off once on base.

Pickoffs, Some kids have different footwork when they are going to check a runner or attempt a pickoff.
Many will have a little higher balance position and sometimes slower.

The next time you hear or say, “Watch the Pitcher” , remember we are watching to make us better hitters and baserunners. This will get more points on the board and more opportunities to win a youth baseball game.
